A pioneer of the West Coast Jungle scene, Matt’s scratching, juggling, and style of mixing has endured the test of time. With 18 years behind the wheels of steel, DJ Thistle has played close to 2000 shows, won a Red Bull Thre3style Battle, been invited to the now infamous Shambhala Music Festival 6 times, has 2 Beatport Top 100 releases, and his residency won best club an unprecedented 3 years in a row.
2 years after he started to DJ in 1997, Matt launched the Frontside Records moniker. Bucking the trend of House and Trance music, he began throwing raves that only featured Jungle, Hip Hop, and Break Beat artists. This lead to the opening of Frontside Records as a record store and the creation of Frontside Fridays, a heavy Bass Music club night that ran for nearly 5 years in the early 2000’s, hosted by Thistle and Audited Beats. After the internet killed physical music sales, Matt left the store and taught in the Audio Engineering department at CATO. In his time at CATO students and instructors like Excision, Datsik, Chaosphere and Stickybuds went through its doors.
If you are in Kelowna on a Friday night, no matter how big of a show is happening elsewhere in town, Rose’s is packed by 10 pm because Thistle still brings the heat to a residency which recently won Best of Kelowna Readers Choice for Best Nightlife Venue 3 years in a row. Tuesday is DnB night, Friday is a Bass Music style College night, and Saturday is Dancehall, Hip Hop, Soca, Electro, and Club Music.
